Television has become an integral part of everybody's life. Even though everyone is aware of its dangers, warned explicitly by the oompa loompas from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. But no matter what the warnings were things never really affected people very much and the popularity of the 'Idiot Box' was and is still rock solid. Initially the TV was used to show popular movies to the public but all the production houses quickly moved towards the making of TV shows that had a regular viewership. What the production houses realized is that people will watch the same movies over and over only a limited number of times but a serial that has a good storyline can assure a timed viewership everyday.
The viewer ratings of these shows were sparked from the debuts of Howdy Doody and Meet The Press. After these shows many others came into the field soon enough and started taking over every genre of TV watching like drama, comedy, documentaries, news, etc. certain TV series were so beloved that the characters become almost a part of every household. People started identifying themselves with the characters and become so involved in the lives of the people on the show that they began to feel that if they did not know how the plot unfurled then they were somehow letting their new family down. The comedy genre helped to take the viewer away from their day's hustle-bustle and proved beyond doubt that laughter is after all the best medicine.
In the years that passed a new form of comedy programming came into being - Sitcom or Situational Comedy. This type was extremely well received and the shows ran for an exceptionally long run. These were so beloved that many people began to tape their shows and watch them over and over as and when they felt like.
In our generation, technology has gone beyond the times of VHS tapes and CDs and we now speak of only DVDs and the more recent Blue Ray Discs. Today you can get collections of all the episodes of your favorite TV shows to add to your personal library. You can get the season by season DVDs filled with other attractions like the Director's commentary, etc. you can get old British Comedies like Fools And Horses Only, Faulty Towers, 'Allo 'Allo, Mind Your Language, etc as well as American shows like FRIENDS, Frasier, I Love Lucy, M*A*S*H, etc.
